He maps the case like a screenplay: clues, red herrings, a missing Borsalino, five suspiciously empty seats, a woman's handbag in a dead man's pocket. He treats every interview as raw material. The investigation, in turn, starts feeding off his narrative instincts. When Ellery deduces that Frances Ives Pope and her fiancé Steve Barry committed the murder — using a ring containing a cyanide-tipped pin — the problem is structural: no hard evidence. The ring is gone. The incriminating SSD drive has been destroyed. Ellery does what any good screenwriter would do: he writes an ending. From Italy, finishing the purchase of his father's retirement house in Liguria, he sends Richard a screenplay — a sting in which the detective lures the killers into attempting another murder, catching them with the weapon on them. Richard performs the sting exactly as written. It works.
