Steph is 16, attends high school as an early enrollee, and secretly plays drums in her uncle Mark's recording studio — her real passion, hidden from everyone. When Stage Diving, the country's most famous rock band, discovers that Steph's accidental recording is the best audition they've ever heard, they want her. Except she's a minor. Except her mother can't find out. Except the band is a chaos of secrets: Speed the guitarist works only when chemically altered, Kris the singer suffers from panic attacks, Lux the bassist hides nervous alopecia under a wig, and the disgraced ex-drummer Dave — lover of the manager Denise — is waiting for the first chance to take his seat back.

The fans want Steph, not Dave. The tour and the live album begin. Then Dave's sabotage escalates to murder — Bart, the band's beloved late drummer, didn't die in an accident. And Speed, unable to bear the weight of it, relapses and dies of an overdose.
